The Office of International Relations

The Office of International Relations (IR) aims to achieve internationalization of education through academic collaborative activities with universities abroad. Signing of MoUs and partnering with universities facilitates agreement and cooperation in the conduct of various programmes and different inbound and outbound activities are facilitated for faculty, students and research scholars. Director and Assistant Director of International Relations spearheads the team at VIT Chennai. Their vast and earlier experience in organizing various international programmes has resulted in successful conduct of myriad of events at VIT Chennai. Members of the IR team help in organizing and coordinating the various programmes of IR. The IR Initiatives are ably supported by the world class facilities and amenities available at the campus. Some of the facilities that aid in promoting a multi-cultural ambience are:

Inbound activities

Visit of Professors from Universities abroad

Professors from different universities abroad are invited regularly to deliver guest lecture to our students and to interact with our faculty members, to work on joint research and publications and to plan about conducting joint conferences. The delegation from Taiwan, UK universities etc. are a few to reckon with as it brought out MoU’s as a result and short term courses and twinning programmes are being discussed further.

Adjunct Professors at VIT Chennai

  • Dr. Khaled Ahmed from University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK was an adjunct professor at the school of electrical engineering between February 28, 2017 and March 6, 2017.
  • Dr. Kamisetty R Rao from University of Texas, Arlington, USA was an adjunct professor at the school of computer science and engineering between March 6, 2017 and March 17, 2017.
  • Dr. Lorna Uden from Staffordshire University, UK was an adjunct professor at the school of computer science and engineering between March 9, 2016 and April 2, 2016.
  • Dr. Sumeet Aphale, Lecturer, University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK was an adjunct professor at the school of electrical engineering between July 29, 2016 and August 12, 2016.
  • Dr. Apel Mahmud, Professor, Deakin University, Australia was an adjunct professor at the school of electrical engineering between June 17, 2016 and June 28, 2016.

Short Term Courses

VIT Chennai is the home ground for Deakin University students of Australia to learn Big Data Analytics. Right from the start of the first batch in February 2017, this course has attracted 34 students from Deakin. The office of International Relations and Data Analytics Research Group (DARG) of the School of Computing Sciences and Engineering, in association with IBM as its knowledge partner has been offering these courses for fifteen days. This Multi-faceted programme concentrates on academics as well as cultural learning. It is well planned and scheduled in such a way that it includes industrial visits, cultural visits, hackathons and yoga sessions.

Batch 1: The first batch of 15 students participated in the short term course on Big Data Analytics between February 13, 2017 and February 27, 2017. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Grayson Perry, Consul Commercial & Trade Commissioner, Australian Trade Commission, Chennai. Mr. Lawrence Mohanraj, Country-Lead, Academic Initiative, IBM India Pvt. Ltd was the chief guest for the valedictory function.

Batch 2: The second batch of 11 post graduate students participated in the Advanced Data Analytics course conducted between October 25, 2017 and November 8, 2017. The course was inaugurated by Dr. Lawrence Mohanraj, Country-Lead, Academic Initiative, IBM India Pvt. Ltd and Ms. Naila Mazzucco, Trade commissioner, Austrade was the chief guest for the valedictory.

Batch 3: Conducted between November 27, 2017 and December 11, 2017, the third batch had 8 students from Deakin University and the course was inaugurated by Dr. N Sambandam, Pro Vice Chancellor, VIT Chennai. Dr. Robin Doss, Deputy Head, School of Information Technology, Deakin University was the chief guest for the valedictory function.

Joint International Conferences

Power Engineering Computing and Control – PECCON 2017 was conducted by the School of Electrical Engineering in a joint collaborative venture with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden between 2nd and 4th March 2017. The International conference was based on the theme of “Conceptualizing Green Energy Solutions for Smart World”. Dr. Anders Malmquist was the key note speaker. Dr. Prahalad Vadakkepat of National University of Singapore, Dr. Aktar Kalam, Victoria University, Australia, Dr. Khaled Ahmed, University of Aberdeen, UK and Ms. Nikhita Hari, University of Cambridge, UK attended the conference as speakers.

Outbound Activities

  • 100 students have been sent to different partner universities abroad for semester abroad programme / summer/winter internships between 2013 and 2017.
  • 10 VIT faculty have been to various countries to present papers or deliver lectures or for collaborative research activities between 2015 and 2017.
  • 12 faculty of VIT Chennai have ongoing research projects and joint publications
  • 15 research scholars have been to universities abroad for paper presentations, research activities
  • 2 of our professors have been to other universities abroad as Adjunct Professors between 2016 and 2017

Visit of VIT Faculty to universities abroad - 2018

Dr. Mini Ghosh, Professor of Mathematics, visited Anyang Institute of Technology, China for joint research work in the field of Disease modeling. During her two weeks stay at AIT, between March 05 – 16, 2018, she delivered an invited talk on “Mathematical modeling of Zika virus disease” to the UG students and the teachers of Mathematics and Physics at AIT. She also visited Xinyang Normal University, China and had discussions with them on possible areas of collaborative research.

 

Student Exchange Programme

14 students and two faculty from Zhengzhou University, China visited VIT Chennai between 5th and 12th March 2017. They were to India on a cultural /industrial visit.

Students and faculty of Applachian State University, USA visited VIT Chennai on June 15, 2017. Dr. Joseph Sathiaraj delivered a lecture on “Religions in India”.

Students from China visited VIT Chennai on July 28, 2016. Around 40 students and 2 faculty were on an Internship visit to VIT Chennai. They were taken on cultural /industrial visit to various places of cultural importance along with the industries.

Recent Events

    • he office of International Relations organized a two day workshop for the students of VIT Chennai on “Beyond Reality – AR/VR” in association with Mages Institute of Excellence, Singapore on 29th and 30th of January 2018.
    • On 10th December, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm Ms. Mandy Sin – International Manager, Ms. Sze Ming Lee – Assistant Manager for Office of Master of Science & Professional Programs, Ms. Ujala Chadha – Director of Rank Global Services Company & University Associate and Mr. Rajiv Mathur – Director of Rank Global Services Company & University Associate visited the Chennai campus and gave a talk on higher studies in HKUST university.
    • Dr. Nicolas Kang-Riou and Ms. Madhu from Salford University, UK visited the campus on 12th December, from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm and discussed with the law school and Business school about the possible collaborations between their University and VIT Chennai campus.
    • On 13th December, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm, a detailed presentation about academic programs and internship opportunity was given by Mr.Nilesh, EDHEC Business School.
    • A talk on “Future Career Prospects for Research Scholars after Completing PhD” was arranged for the Research Scholars at AB1-607 from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Resource Person: Dr. Apel Mahmud, Professor from Deakin University Australia
    • On 14th December, from 11.00 am to 12.00 noon, the following representatives of University of Twente and Dutch Universities visited the Chennai campus and gave a presentation on academic programs and internship opportunities at their Universities. Ms.Saranya Prakash, University Of Twente, Mr.Abhinay Reddy Han University Of Applied Sciences & Rotterdam Business School, Ms.Keerthana Thiagarajan, Saxion University & Vrije University Amsterdam and Mr.Vignesh Pratap, Radboud University.
    • On 14th December from 9 am to 4:30 pm, one day workshop on “Nonlinear Controller Design for Conventional Power Networks and Microgrids” was conducted at AB101 for faculty members and research scholars. Resource Person: Dr. Apel Mahmud, Professor from Deakin University Australia.
    • Professor Dr. Vijayakumar from University of Missouri-Kansas City(UMKC), USA visited our VIT Chennai campus on December 20th (AN) and 21st (FN) 2018. During his visit, he gave a guest lecture on IoT and Cloud Security for students and research scholars and discussed about opportunities to study at UKMC, USA for Students.

JAN 2019

    • On 9th January, from 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm Ms. Maneeta Sahmey, Country Business Engagement & Partnerships Adviser – India, Nottingham University visited Chennai campus and discussed about Internship for our students and their students, International Transfer Program for students, Faculty Exchange Program, Joint Project Proposal / Joint Research publications, Short term program for students from Nottingham University
    • Dr. Konstantinos Salonitis , Reader in Manufacturing Systems, Manufacturing Systems and Management Programme Director , Sustainable Manufacturing Systems Centre and Mr.Jasminder Khanna South Asia Manager, International Partnerships and Student Recruitment, from Cranefield University, UK came and delivered the guest lecture to students.
    • Dr Knezevic Professor & Founder of MIRCE Akademy at Exeter University discussed about the possible collaborations between his Academy and VIT Chennai campus on 18th January.
    • On 22nd January, Dr. Cheng, Director of Brand & fashion management, had discussion with fashion school on possible collaborations in research and academics.
    • On 30th January, from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm, Ms. Catriona McCarthy, Director of Global Engagement and Ms. Anna Zmuda-Trzebiatowska, Global Grants Development Manager, Research Development from Ulster University based in Northern Ireland, UK discussed the possible collaborations between their University and VIT Chennai.
    • On 31st January, Stefan Östlund, Vice-President (Global Relations) at KTH, Rajeev Thottappillil – Head of Dept of Electromagnetic Engg., and Regional Director for India Projects, Dr. Murugan Natarajan Arul, Prof. came and discussed with respective faculty members (School of Electronics and School of Advanced Science) about the research and academic collaborations that can be done.

FEB 2019

  • On 4th February, Dr Nimay Kalyani International Coordinator – South Asia Faculty of Business and Law, Dr Antony (Tony) Drew – Assistant Dean International (ADI) Faculty of Business and Law, from New Castle, Australia, Ujala Chaddha and Rajiv Mathur from Rank Global Univ, Australia. The objective of the meeting was to explore possible active partnerships, articulation arrangements, Summer / Winter programs and to share the details regarding Dual degree program with the interested graduating students. The University of Newcastle has a unique partnership with Montclair State University-USA that offers Dual Degree – MBA Global and Masters in Business Analytics. This program also gives STEM students an opportunity to work in the USA for three years under OPT Visa.
  • Dr. Sri hari from Binghamton, USA, visited the campus on 5th Feb and delivered a guest lecture on “Industry 4.0” for PG in SMBS, discussed the progress of joint research with Binghamton and proposed a joint International Conference on Power Engineering Control and Computing Conference” (PECCON-2019) with State University of New York (SUNY – Binghamton).

  • Mr.Gennadh Rogalev, Deputy Representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in India, Prof.Irina Trubetskova Estonian Marine Institute in Tallinn, Estonia , & Prof.Emmanuel Samson from Southern Illinois University were visited Chennai campus and delivered keynote address in the International Conference on Emerging trends in English and foreign Language Teaching on Feb 5, 2019.
  • Dr Jeremy Novak , Southern Cross Univeristy, Australia, Priyanka Vaidyanath | Business Development Manager – Chennai had visited the campus on 6th February and presented a guest Lecture on ” Sustainable cities”.

  • Mr Saravanan, International Manager (Faculty of Engineering & Information Sciences) from University of Wollongong discussed about the International Transfer Programs for our students and Short term programs for their students on 6th February.

  • Dr Michael Cree, senior lecturer in Electronic Engineering, Prof Nihal Kularatna, Associate Professor, School of Engineering, Dr Leandro Bolzoni is a metallurgist, Dr Martin Atkins, Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering, Dr Vimal Kumar, lecturer in Computer Science , Professor Siniah Ilanko from Waikato University acted as Speakers for International seminar on Advances and Challenges in Engineering for 21st Century on 7th and 8th February.

  • Dr. Shrikant Joshi, University West, Sweden, delivered a guest Lecture on Surface Engineering on 7th February.

  • Mr. Matt Greenberg – Assistant Director – Visiting International Student Program (VISP), University of Wisconsin-Madison, Adult Career and Special Student Services (ACSSS) had visited our campus on 15th Feb 2019 and discussed about Visiting International Student Program (VISP) for our students.
  • Deepika R Phukan, Admissions Representative, UMASS Lowell, delivered a short presentation to our students on higher studies at their University on 15th February.

  • David Asirvatham, Executive Dean, Faculty of Innovation & Technology, Taylor University,Malaysia, had visited to our campus to discuss on Research and Academic collaborations on 18th February 2019. Highlighted about the short term program on Data Analytics.

  • Prof. Jackie McCoy, Associate Dean (Global Engagement), from Ulster Business School, discussed about Faculty/Staff Exchange, semester abroad program, international transfer programs and articulations on 25th February.
  •  Ms. Kirstein Murray – Director, International of Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology University of Technology, Sydney, Associate Professor Farookh Khadeer Hussain -Head of Discipline (Software Engineering),School of Software Decision Support and e-Service Intelligence Lab, Centre for Artificial Intelligence,Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, University of Technology, Sydney and Dr. Nabin Sharma, Senior Lecturer, School of Software, Faculty of Engineering & IT at University of Technology, Sydney had visited our Chennai campus on 27th Feb 2019 and delivered a guest lecture to CSE students.

  • Dr. Ganesan R, Asst. Director – International Relations has attended the German- Indian round table event at Hotel Residency in Coimbatore on 13th February 2019.

  • Dr. Ghalib, Asst. Director IR and Mr.Ganesan, IR Office from Vellore campus had visited the Chennai campus on 27th Feb 2019 and presented a session to 3rd year and 1st year PG students about SAP opportunities.

  • On 1st March 2019 at 11:30 am, Ms. Nicky Jokshi Recruitment Advisor, Graduate Admission and Dr. Pat Phelan Professor from Arizona State University USA have visited Chennai campus and delivered a presentation to III year and final year students on Make. Code. Fly. Build. Design. Engineer. Learn about funding your studies, emerging opportunities in Engineering fields and how to make a good application.

  • Mr. John Quirk, Director – Office of Global Engagement, University of Nottingham and Ms. Maneeta Office of Global Engagement have visited Chennai campus on 7th March 2019 at 10:15 am. Various Academic and Research Collaborations between VIT and Nottingham University were discussed

  • On March 27th 2019, Prof. Dr. Shien-Kuel Liaw, Distinguished Professor and Vice Dean at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Taipei Taiwan has visited Chennai campus and delivered a guest lecture to BTech ECE students. Also, interacted with faculty members and research scholars who are working in the Optical Communication research area

    National Visits

    Dr. Ganesan R, Asst. Director – International Relations has attended the event called “Celebration of Deakin University (Aus)’s 25 years of engagement in India” on March 14th 2019 at 6:30 pm at Hotel Chola Chennai. Chief Guests: Professor Jane den Hollander AO, Vice Chancellor & President, Deakin University, Australia and Ms Susan Grace, Consul-General, Australian Consulate, Chennai.

  • On 15th March 2019, following faculty members have visited Japan Consulate and met Mr. Kojiro Uchiyama – Consul General of Japan and discussed various possible Academic, Research and Industrial collaborations between Universities, Industries at Japan and VIT.

    On March 11th 2019 at 3 pm, a Net meeting was conducted between VIT Chennai and SUNY, Binghamton USA to discuss about the further progress on PECCON 2019 Conference by SELECT jointly with Binghamton University USA.

Upcoming Events

  • Deakin University is planning to send the students for the short term courses on Big Data Analytics, Advanced Data Analytics and Cyber Threat Analysis in the month of October 2019 and discussions are going on in this regards.
  • International Conference on “Power Engineering Control and Computing Conference” (PECCON-2019) will be organized from 12th to 14th December 2019 at Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Chennai jointly with State University of New York , Binghamton, USA. The theme of the conference is “Smart Technology for Smart Grid”.
